Rising athlete Ayomal Akalanka of Ambagamuwa Central College shattered the meet record in the Boys’ 400m hurdles on the second day of the Junior National Athletic Championship 2025, held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama yesterday.
Akalanka clocked a remarkable 50.20 seconds, breaking his own previous record of 52.53 seconds in the Boys’ Under-20 400m hurdles. U.G.K.H. Uyanwatta of Trinity College secured second place with a time of 53.88s, while Ravidu Jayathissa of Royal College, Colombo finished third in 54.40s.
Overall, seven new meet records fell on day two of the championship:
- Ayomal Akalanka (Ambagamuwa CC) — Boys’ Under-20 400m hurdles: 50.20s (Previous: 51.53s in 2024)
- L.G.A. Sathsarani (Air Force) — Girls’ Under-23 400m hurdles: 1:00.41 (Previous: 1:01.97 in 2013)
- W.N.E. Silva (St. Mary’s Convent, Chilaw) — Boys’ Under-16 300m hurdles: 39.73 (Previous: 40.27 in 2024)
- G.R. Dharmadasa (St. Joseph’s Balika, Kegalle) — Girls’ Under-16 300m hurdles: 45.99 (Previous: 46.44 in 2023)
- Selvarasa Nirusika (Arunodhaya College, Alaveddy) — Girls’ Under-20 pole vault: 3.40m (Previous: 3.34m in 2016)
- Dilki Nehara (Sri Sumangala Balika, Panadura) — Girls’ Under-18 triple jump: 12.44m (Previous: 12.19m in 2024)
