A significant step toward enhancing water sports in Sri Lanka was taken yesterday when Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Sunil Kumara Gamage met with representatives from four key aquatic sports federations —Canoeing and Kayaking, Rowing, Sailing, and Surfing at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The discussion focused on laying the groundwork for the establishment of a National Water Sports Centre, a facility that aims to support local athletes and improve infrastructure for competitive water sports in the country.
The meeting was attended by Director General of Department of Sports Development Shemal Fernando, along with Presidents and Secretaries of the respective federations. Officials emphasised the importance of the new facility in training, development, and international representation for Sri Lankan athletes.
Minister Gamage reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to fostering aquatic sports and ensuring Sri Lanka remains competitive in global tournaments.
Further steps toward the center’s development will be planned in the coming months.
