Dilhani, Sumedha lead Lankan Athletes to South Korea

The Sri Lanka Senior Athletic team led by Dilhani Lekamge and Sumedha Ranasinghe left for South Korea Saturday to participate in the 26th Asian Senior Athletic Championship, which will be held in Gumi, South Korea from May 27 to 31.SLA Secretary Saman Kumara Gunawardana said Aruna Darshana the 400m Olympian who got injured recently once again fit for the event and he will compete on first day (27) at the 400m heat while on same day Nadeesha Ramanayake will run at the women’s 400m heat. The sprinter Yupun Abeykoon based in Italy will join his coach and physiotherapist who are with the rest of the team and will compete in 100m event as well as 4x 100m relay event.

Forty three Asian countries will participate in this meet, which will be organised by the Asian Athletic (AA) and Athletic Association of South Korea (AASK).At the 2023 Bangkok Asian Championships, Sri Lanka won eight medals, which included three gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals.

The Sri Lankan team consists of 13 male and seven female athletes. Sumeda Ranasinghe and Rumesh Tharanga are two leading Asian Javelin throws who are top Sri Lasnkan medal hopes. Last time 400 gold medalist Nadeesha Ramanayake and relay teams are also capabal of winning medals. Two school athletes Lesandu Arthavidu (high jump)  and Meron Wijesinghe (4x 100m relay) both from Ananda College are also included in the Sri Lanka team.
