Gibbs to coach SL at Asia Rugby Top 4

In a move set to galvanize Sri Lanka’s national rugby ambitions, Sri Lanka Rugby Director Inthi Marikar has secured one of the most respected coaches to lead the national side into Asia Rugby’s Top 4 competition. 

Rodney Gibbs, a former All Blacks assistant coach renowned for his tactical acumen and player development skills, will assume the role of Head Coach of the Sri Lankan outfit from 26 May onwards. This appointment marks a turning point in Sri Lanka’s high-performance pathway and is a testament to Marikar’s vision and tenacity in elevating the sport at home.

Gibbs his reputation for transforming forward packs and backline efficiency precedes him in the global rugby community. Securing Gibbs’s commitment for the upcoming encounters against South Korea, Hong Kong, and the UAE signals Sri Lanka’s intent to compete at the highest level in Asia Rugby’s Top 4 tournament.

Dushanth Lewke, current CR and FC and Royal College, Head Coach and former Taranaki player (2006–07), as the forwards coach. 

Lewke’s proven track record in building dominant scrums and breakdown efficiency will mesh seamlessly with Gibbs’s overarching game plan. 

For the backs, Lasintha de Costa a former CR and national team standout will bring his vision and skill-set to bear, ensuring that Sri Lanka’s attack is both dynamic and incisive.

A 40-player training squad drawn from across the island, have already begun and rigorous sessions tailored to Gibbs’s philosophies. From core strength and conditioning to intricate phase play, the squad is absorbing a level of expertise previously unseen in Sri Lankan rugby. 

The squad is likely to be reduced to 30 members before the Korean encounter.

This depth will prove invaluable during the high-stakes clashes with South Korea, Hong Kong, and the UAE, each of whom poses distinct tactical challenges. 

Almost all three sides begun their trainings month ahead with the Hong Kong outfit strong contender for AR Top 4 aiming at a Rugby World Cup debut in Australia in 2027 are already in kangaroo soil having some warm up matches.
